Thai Fusion Wanton Mee – Young Hawker’s Delightful Twist on Tradition!
As a 21-year-old, the weight and responsibilities of adulthood are slowly creeping up on me. But, while I’m still hopelessly clueless as to what I want to do with my life, next-gen hawker, Yeo Tian Haw, has got it all figured out! Tian Haw opened up Thai Fusion Wanton Mee with his childhood friend, Zi Jian, just four months ago. Not only is this Tian Haw’s first venture in the F&B industry, he’s also just 21 years old! The pair took on different part-time jobs before a trip to Thailand changed their lives forever. After falling in love with a bowl of Thai wanton mee, they decided to develop their own version!
At first glance, their signature Thai Wanton Noodle ($3.50/ $4.50/ $5.50) definitely doesn’t resemble the classic Singaporean version. Instead of the typical charred red char siew, this wanton mee comes with stir-fried garlic pork slices! My $4.50 portion came with a generous heap of egg noodles, and three fried wantons.
Is it unhealthy? Yes. But is it delicious? Absolutely! Unlike some of the typical wanton mees out there, this was not drenched in a dark sauce. These egg noodles might appear dry, but they were thoroughly coated in delectable pork lard! Smooth and sinful, these springy noodles are heavily infused with the tantalising flavours of pork. In fact, this rendition of wanton mee actually reminded me a lot of Sarawak Kolo Mee! Some might find the noodles too greasy though.
The pork slices tasted strongly of garlic, which added a nice depth of flavour to the dish. Even though the pork was tender, I felt that they were cut a bit too thin. If the slices were slightly thicker, they would have had a more succulent bite. Overall, this was still a refreshing twist, and I didn’t find myself missing char siew! I’ve no complaints about the fried wantons which contain a pork mixture that is marinated with soy sauce, oyster sauce and pepper. These golden-brown delights were wonderfully crispy and very well-seasoned!
Thai Fusion Wanton Mee doesn’t just serve Wanton Mee. I decided to give their Thai Fried Chicken Wing ($1.40/ pc) a try. I had to make a conscious effort to not eat them straight away. These scrumptious wings were glistening with a deep caramelised char. The chicken is flavoured with turmeric powder and is marinated overnight! Juicy and tender, these chicken wings are a great meaty accompaniment to the Thai wanton mee.
Thai Fusion Wanton Mee is worth visiting if you’ll like to try a unique version of wanton mee. Also, it’s amazing how these next-gen hawkers opened their first hawker stall at such a young age!
