Ya Po Bean Curd at Sha Tin, Hong Kong is Worth Trying it Again!
If you have read my previous posts onHyatt Regency Sha Tin, you should know that we spend many days exploring the more rural part of Hong Kong, which is Sha Tin. To be frank, the boy and I were against the idea of staying in Sha Tin initially because it is quite a distance from the main HK island (about 45 mins train ride) and we don’t know if there is anything there.
But many of our HK friends say Sha Tin is nice and it is “different”, so we decided to give it a try. And true enough, it is really different. Because we can see mountains in Sha Tin! We can ride bicycle and do some trekking. We can enjoy a much cooler weather. Now this feels more like a holiday!
So we met up with some of my friends in HK. One of them is Weibo. We have been in the same secondary school for 3 years. He is a high flyer and his company relocate him to Hong Kong. We went to a few makan places in Sha Tin, and the most memorable one is Ya Po Bean Curd (亚婆豆腐花).
I don’t think people in Hong Kong call them bean curd, they usually say tofu pudding or soy bean pudding. But nevermind, as long as you understand it’s tau hway can already. Hidden in the midst of Dapo’s street market in Sha Tin, Ya Po Bean Curd has been around for a long time making soy products from scratch.
It is pretty easy to locate this place because you will usually see people crowding outside the shop enjoying their beancurd. Each of us ordered a bowl of warm beancurd (HK$7) and what’s the verdict? Well, we ordered the second bowl after finishing the first!
Damn, it was sooooo silky smooth and I don’t think I had tasted such sweet delicious tau hway. They make it in a big pot, serve it in a bowl, scoop a few spoonful of tau hway and sprinkle some orange sugar on it. The sugar melted immediately with the liquid of the beancurd, creating an orange syrup.
So if you happen to be in Sha Tin doing hiking, don’t forget to drop by Ya Po Bean Curd. Very memorable!
